SEL Project: Inspirational Lap Quilts
The purpose of my grant is to encourage compassion using social emotional learning strategies and increase valuable real world math skills while designing and creating 20 lap quilts for Hospice and children under the age of 5 that are hospitalized locally.
I want my students to understand that one act of kindness to someone in need can lead to other acts of kindness. My parents taught me at a earlier that being kind and having compassion toward others is one of the best characteristics you can possess. I want to instill this same concept while at the same time increasing my studentās creativity and real-world math skills especially knowledge of measurement and fractions when designing and creating the lap quilts. The students will use the Silhouette Cameo , graphic supplies and sewing machine to add a comforting and inspirational quote to the quilt.

Digital Social Emotional Positive Affirmations
Our students love to learn, and they want to know what they are expected to know. They are creative, imaginative, and very much a part of the age of technology. Let’s let the studentās document their elementary grade level lives with a news broadcast! We would like to start student news broadcast with my students. K-12 students will take turns working as members of the news production team. The students will help prepare, document, film, and edit a bi-monthly broadcast highlighting students and events in the school. They will also have the chance to be on camera as interviewers, journalists, and news anchors.
My research question I want to research is, āIs it possible the students will have more drive to complete a personal project when they are responsible solely for the content?ā
Each broadcast will consist of a welcome and positive affirmation from students to students and teachers. It will conclude with production credits and music. The broadcast will be viewed by the entire student body every other Friday evening before school is dismissed. Empowering students to use new found videography and writing skills for the new broadcast is important in building a foundation for lifelong skill. Videography is a fun art that I would love to see my students enjoy. As the word becomes more and more digital, students need to be exposed and immersed in videography to hopefully help with becoming future presenters, podcasters or documentarian.
In order to produce and view the broadcast we will have to purchase additional audio/visual equipment. We are requesting a camcorder, microphone, projector, green screen kit, and tripod for the filming of the news. The computers at our school have iMovie software that will be used for editing the footage, but we are requesting a fire wire cable to download the footage from the camera to the computer. Once the news is finalized, we will play the broadcast over the school in-house system. We are requesting two audio/video cables and two laptop connector cables to connect the projectors to our in-house system, and the Audio Enhancement system already installed in each classroom.
The broadcast will help teach standards from the State Core along with Social Emotional Learning. The students involved in the broadcast will learn to use multimedia tools, such as audio/visual equipment and video editing software. They will learn how to plan, organize, and produce a news broadcast, practicing organizational and communication skills as well as performance and speaking skills.
Students will also help create a positive school environment. The news broadcast they produce will allow students, faculty, and staff at PES School to be aware of what is happening in the school along with encompassing a positive outook and attitude. Classes of different grade levels on different ends of the school will be able to see projects, productions, and events they may not otherwise be aware of, creating unity in the school. The public service announcements produced for the news will help the student body to be better citizens. Who knows, maybe I can help develop the love of a budding video journalist through their use.

Get to Know Us Inside Out
The future of workers in Kentucky will need to rely a great deal on collaboration, teamwork, cooperate and communication skills. Employers will look for the same traits in their employees. As we get ready our students to be successful in school and beyond, we must cultivate these behaviors often and early. It is imperative that positive social emotional learning and communication is important to the overall emotional stability of our students. Students need to develop their social skills, confidence, adaptability and more.
Integrating cooperative board games into the classroom will provide everybody who plays the opportunity to practice working together as a team for a common goal. I am hoping to utilize various physical and digital platform games. My students will also practice communication skills (such as dynamic listening and verbal perception), and fair play. Teambuilding and trust are encouraged and cultivated. These games also provide students that might not often feel doing well, empowered or built-in at school, an opportunity to fit in. A movement, that when supported, will continue throughout their academic and professional career.
The games I have selected will strengthen the academic skills lined out in the Common Core Standards. The games in this grant reinforce an extensive assortment of subject areas including math, literature, science, social studies, art and culture. In the traditional classroom, educational learning games are common place and supportive, but often pit student against student. The games in this grant will give all children the chance to practice learning while being a useful element of a team at the same time. Students participating in these interactive games, will have a blast discussing different social-emotional scenarios. Another game utilizing This card game uses different questions and scenarios to help kids express themselves about stress, anxiety, anger and more.

History Alive! 50 Awesome Johnson County Facts
During this project, I will recruit students from a variety of K-8 grade levels who will participate and contribute in this project as addressing some of the framework standards. Cultural tradition is something that all individuals share; wherever we come from there is a custom that follows all of us from that place. No matter where you grow up, where you go, your culture will always be something you can take with you. Cultural legacy can come in a lot of forms: tangible, intangible, and natural. History Alive will allow students to investigate primary and secondary source documents as well as increase and expand their own primary sources such as a video documentary. Students will demonstrate mastery of other skills and concepts, such as: interpreting and constructing timelines, showing connections between historical events and ideas, distinguishing historical fact from opinion, and interpreting the past within its own historical context, rather than in terms of present-day norms. The two major objectives for this project are: 1) to encourage students to develop and use primary and secondary sources to enrich and build on their understanding of historical events already learned through the use of established sources and 2) to provide the Johnson County community with the preservation of memories, stories and historical recollections of Paintsville residents.

Play Based Learning and Exploring 2
In order to provide enrichment activities for all my students, I will implement the use of hands on educational games/activities in small group and individual settings. I will also be able to use most of the games and activities with students who are participating digitally. This will improve and strengthen students reading, writing, and cognitive reasoning skills in a fun and creative way. Students will use the handsāon materials along with other educational āappsā to improve their ability to perform educational objectives. Each day, students will be actively engaged in educational activities using the class hands on games, activities and educational tools. There are basic benefits of hands-on learning: increases a childās memory capacity, develops hand eye coordination, beneficial especially for children with attention disorders and are skill building such as adding, counting money and blending letters to make words. This year we will purchase the various educational games and creative tool sets. These programs will develop logical reasoning and fine motor skills for my students. This will be especially helpful and fun for my students with severe fine motor skills disabilities. In addition to this, students will also be able to use the devices for other educational āappsā. Using tools such as game pieces, scissors, and glue for projects and activities also builds fine motor skills that is needed for realāworld activities through their lives. By having activities that require talking, listening and movement, I am hoping it will engage several areas of their brain so they can attain and retain the information for extended periods of time. My students learn best when the learning is active, when they are engaged in handsāon classroom games and activities and involved in what they are learning. It is thought that when children use all their senses it helps the brain create paths that make it easier and faster to remember information.
