First grade students at West Whitesburg Elementary used project based learning to discover animal transformations. Students designed and created terrariums that were used to view the lifecycle of butterflies and frogs and praying mantis. We also purchased terrariums as models and models of lifecycles. We used a document camera to view the different stages of the lifecycle up close. Students designed journals in which they are recorded their learning. Students then created a presentation to show all that they have learned. These creations were presented at school to other students and community members after caterpillars transformed! We also had a release party to release our butterflies and praying mantis. Our tadpoles are still growing and have been placed in a small pond to continue growing after school is out. My students really enjoyed the research they completed, and did an excellent job designing the habitats they presented.
