When Pikeville Elementary School started a garden project, no one expected the project to grow as well as the plants. The students were able to grow kale, pak choy, broccoli, peas, turnips, radishes, cabbage, onions, carrots, mustard and mache’. They served salad over 10 days in the school cafeteria from the garden’s bounty. The project grew through learning extensions such as a worm farm, composting system, pollinator garden and the creation of an extensive video library. Students involved in the school’s STLP group created a Twitter Account, where weekly tweets were shared to update others on the garden’s
progress. Who would have ever thought a school garden would be so successful through the fall and winter months.
