Project Title: Engaging students through Creative Technology

Students enjoy the computer lab, but often believe computers are only for games. This project is designed to help students delve into a deeper understanding of technology and its many applications. In a project-based learning environment, students will interact with each other and the community to create videos and digital storytelling projects that inform their audience on a variety of topics, such as the History of Hazard, school and cafeteria rules and procedures, and an introduction to kindergarten. Through this project, students will learn keyboarding, coding and editing.

Project Title: A Place to Play

S.T.A.R.S. Mini Grant Recipient

Our CmPS team will measure, design, and recreate the Lothair Park playground. They want to create a place in our community that is a safe, fun place for the children to play. So far the students have gathered 22 volunteers to help with the actual construction projects that will be involved, and they plan to present to the City Council and other community agencies. The students will design the project, including what types of playground equipment they would like to see in the park. They also want to hold a cookout in the spring at the park to raise additional funds to add more equipment. They want to paint a hopscotch course, add a tree house, remove/redo the merry go round, and much more. The students hope to have the design in place within the next three weeks and for construction to begin this fall. The remainder of the construction would take place as soon as possible in the spring, with the cookout/grand reopening in April.
