The Math of Sewing

October 2016 Presentation:

In math today students always want to know why they’re learning a specific topic and how it is relevant to the real world. A hobby that has become popular recently is embroidery. Another hobby that has been around for many years is quilting. Little do the students know that both of these hobbies include geometry. The students will use the sewing and embroidery machine to create an example of a dilation, enlargements, rotation, and reflection of an image. They will also create a quilting square to collaborate with social studies connecting the use of quilts to tell a story or show that they had different supplies and needs for travelers. The will create the quilting square by formulas for different lines.
