My goal for the new school year was to successfully incorporate the engineering component of the Next Generation Science Skills into my classroom lessons. The primary purpose of engineering is to examine an identified problem and devise a solution,considering constraints on necessary resources.Myproposedunit of study focused on robotics and invention in engineering. Students determined a relevant problem in our local area, affecting residents with disabilities that could be solved through the incorporation of innovative technology. After identifying the problem, student-engineering teams researched and designed an operational model using the EV3 Lego Mindstorms robotics class sets or the Maker Bot 3-D Printer in conjunction with Amy Carter’s presentation to address the determined need. Students recorded their progress in a “Research and Development” notebook,integrating design schematics, photographs,and anecdotal records of the engineering process. By engaging in my proposed unit, students gained first-hand experience in the real world applications of technology as a tool for innovation. The Lego Mindstorms kits provided students with the 21st century critical thinking skills and technological literacy necessary for students in a global market and economy. Additionally, students practiced beneficial teamwork skills and positive social interactions.
