Finding Your Voice

During the regular school day, students frequently need instructions repeated or show limited involvement during the initial release of student activity. The Quantum II, a wireless microphone system, will be used throughout daily instruction to ensure all students receive instruction/feedback that includes adequate volume and optimal vocal clarity. The question is, “Can controlled volume levels through technology improve student success in both communication and comprehension skills?” Resources needed to address the question include implementing The Quantum II is an all-in-one sound system, utilizing Digital Hybrid circuitry, with two infrared microphone receivers, a powerful 30 watt Class D amplifier, digital equalization, digital limiting and a full range dynamic speaker. The chosen system comes with a choice of two transmitter microphones (one for teacher and student). Additional headphones will eliminate distractions from computer stations as other groups or individual students continue with focused instruction. Tech support from Johnson County Schools will be accessed when needed. Students are expected to show improved gains on reading, language, and math assessments as well as increase confidence while participation improves. These outcomes will be measured by data that will be collected from language, reading, and math assessments as well as a teacher developed student surveys to show the impact on confidence and learning attitude levels. First, nine weeks of class instruction will include only regular voice projection(student/teacher). Second, through 4th nine weeks, class instruction will include daily use of wireless microphone systems during instruction and individual student presentations. Data from the nine weeks’ formative assessments will be compared to determine variances in student scores.
