The Magoffin County Elementary STARS Team is made up of students from three elementary schools. Magoffin County is a small rural area, having limited resources and activities, with high unemployment and poverty rates that are historically in the top 5 in the state. Safe, suitable recreational activities are extremely limited to the county’s youth. Limited options for recreation, may lead some students to experiment with controlled substances or seek inappropriate ways to entertain themselves. In cooperation with the REACH Organization, Magoffin County Extension Office, and Magoffin County Family Resource Center, a course of action was developed. We decided to host recreational activities for the 6th grade students of Magoffin County. The purpose of these events would include providing awareness and learning activities with an emphasis on drug education. Activities have included a “Don’t Fall for Drugs” fun and games carnival, and a“R.E.A.C.H. for the S.T.A.R.S.” dance where guest speakers and student presenters shared a drug free message with participants.
