Poppin with Phonics
βThe most common source of reading difficulties is poor phonemic awareness.β
β Dr. David Kilpatrick
In order to proficiently develop phonemic awareness and strong decoding skills for early readers, students must engage in a multi-sensory approach when learning to read. Within a blending learning environment, students should be provided the necessary materials to engage in learning across a variety of platforms that increase exposure and engage multiple learning styles. By creating individual sound bags, students can engage in a multi-sensory experience while learning to read. Employing manipulatives, while engaged in distance learning and in-person learning, is difficult and by providing each student a set of tools, engaging and authentic learning can occur throughout all learning environments. Creating sound bags with Pop-Its, Play-Doh, whisper phones, and sound boxes, each student can engage in authentic learning to build proficient phonemic awareness and phonological ability to build their early literacy skills.
