Jennifer Howard – 2016-2017
Who Me? I can Have a STEM Career?!?
October 2016 Presentation:
Problem of Practice:
Are Magoffin County High School Students pursuing STEM careers (other than medical related fields) at low rates due to lack of STEM career education?
MCHS students are pursuing STEM careers at low rates. Fields of study chosen by recent graduates and career interest inventories of current students show that MCHS students are not choosing STEM careers at a rate that is proportionate with the rate at which careers are STEM related. To address this issue, a STEM career education initiative will be included in the pre-calculus curriculum in my classroom. A group of 40 juniors will be targeted for STEM career education via guest speakers, virtual field trips, Mathematics, Physics Advanced Technology Exploration day at MSU, college visits, and classroom instruction on STEM-related fields of work. Also, in order to increase interest in STEM, problem-based units of study that incorporate pre-calculus with another aspect of STEM will be incorporated throughout the school year.
