“Express” is meant to convey a learning train, which is what I strive for my classes to be—fast and fun, headed straight for a destination–learning. I acquired mini iPads for my classroom and otter boxes to protect them. The students love reading books in this format. It is amazing how receptive they can be to learning simply when the format is changed. These are the same kids that can be reluctant readers. Scrabble has also been a big success. I now use it with my freshmen as a reward. I am finding that adding competition is an excellent way to motivate learning new vocabulary. To date, the high score for 1 word has been 66 points. The student used a “q” and a “z” plus got triple word points. Not only are they competing to win the game, but they are also competing to see who gets the high word score.
