Students at Belfry High School used garlic, which is rich in sulfur to synthesize gold/gold sulfide nanoparticles. The garlic extract was prepared as a capping agent at our facility. The extract was mixed with 1mM of hydrogen tetrachloro aurate (HAuCl4) solution and a dark violet gold/gold-sulfide nanoparticles was obtained. Ocean Optics UV-Vis ultraviolet spectrometer was used to find the Plasmon frequency to qualitatively determine the size of the synthesized nanoparticles. The ultraviolet spectrum confirmed that the garlic extract was able to produce gold colloidal nanoparticles with resonance peak around 520 nm and gold/gold sulfide particles with broad resonance peak in the range from 700 to 850 nm. We have used Dynac II centrifuge to make gold/gold sulfide pellets that will be used to take the Scanning Tunneling Electron Microscope (STEM) images to determine the exact size and shape of the nanoparticles.
