Biography

The project, Medical Mysteries Teach Biology, is a STEM unit for my 12th grade AP Biology and Anatomy students.Through the use of technology, lab experience, inquiry, and problem solving skills, students will investigate cell types, engineer their own experiments to test cellular responses, and familiarize themselves with techniques used to identify different types of bacteria and pathogens. By completing this project, my students will implement microbiology strategies that they have not been able to use before to examine infectious diseases, antibiotic resistance and epidemics. The plan includes virtual missions from the Rice University Center for Technology in Teaching & Learning, virtual bacterial ID labs from HHMI, Med Myst Magazine publications that expose students to information about emerging and re – emerging diseases, and a variety of project-based tasks that will lead students on a medical mystery journey that will allow them to process how pathogens are discovered, monitored and treated.
