Ipads for First Grade

October 2016 Presentation:

Technology is the future. I am a first grade teacher with eighteen intelligent, energetic, and curious little beings who are always eager to learn. I am willing to do anything to keep them interested in fulfilling that thirst for knowledge, while keeping it fun and interesting at the same time. On Monday mornings, I often hear many of them talking about playing a new app/game on their iPads over the weekend. I want to bring this excitement into my classroom with iPad Minis. The only difference is that with the games or apps we will use in the classroom, it will be both fun and educational.
I will be able to incorporate technology into my lesson plans. I will use the iPads primarily as center time for students. This will help me to assist all students’ needs. I can use apps designed with specific skills for specific groups of students. I can use this to help reinforce skills once I have taught the content. Another benefit for my students is the size of the mini-iPads. Smaller hands need smaller devices to work with. It will be much easier for my students to work with the iPad minis than it would be for them to work with a laptop or desk top. I need the resources to make this dream a reality. My students will love sharing the new devices during center time. They will enjoy the interactive games, and I will love the fact that I can monitor and view their progress. Students will grow in phonics and phonemic awareness skills and sight word recognition. They will practice grammar and reading comprehension skills as well. I will be able to see progress in the Early Star Assessment our schools administers three times a year.
With the new Science standards, I look forward to researching and finding apps that can assist in reinforcing the content. Arts/Humanities and Practical Living is also a new addition to our curriculum, and I will be using doodle kids and drawing pads as well. There are so many wonderful apps that can be put to use on these iPads; the students will have a fun experience while learning at the same time. Students will be actively engaged in learning, which will be more beneficial and effective for them.
With the help of these iPad’s, students will be able to master objectives that are aligned with the Common Core Standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science. Students will be able to actively engage themselves in lessons and use the applications available on the iPad’s to help reinforce what is being taught.
Once the grant is approved I will immediately use the iPads in centers to reinforce content. I will do formative assessments to ensure students are making progress. I will constantly research to find new apps that will be beneficial to my students. I hope the students can receive the technology needed to keep learning fun and interesting for them. This will be a great asset to my class.
