Active Learning

October 2016 Presentation:

According to Rebecca Bright in her article “Kids Who Can’t Sit Still” children actually need to move to focus during a complicated mental task, especially those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. From experience, I was one of those “active learners.” I had difficulty focusing during instruction because I wanted to move. I needed to just stand-up. Based on personal experience, I want to be able to give students an opportunity to learn in their least restrictive environment. Research says that students who learn in their least restrictive environment are more in control of their learning and are more successful. I know this is a growing problem based on my observations and personal experiences over the years. Students have more difficulty sitting and learning. As an educator, I have been charged with the duty of finding innovative ways to reduce behavior disruptions as well as engaging all students.
