Phonics VIP

Phonics instruction has taken the back seat in second grade instruction due to such a strong comprehension focus. It is my goal that through quick daily exposure/review of all grade level phonics in combination with the traditional weekly skill instruction and the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum, that I will be able to close gaps in student literacy. It is my goal to boost student reading levels and phonics mastery. My goal is to prevent the loss of students’ phonics skills while boosting students’ exposure to new skills. It is my hope that this will improve overall student reading ability and to develop resources that can be used each year with classes to create a generation of strong readers. With this grant I intend to create multiple ways to expose students to a holistic phonics instruction daily through collaborative effort with parents. In class I intend to provide students with exposure to all of the phonics sounds daily and targeted phonics instruction on specific skills weekly using secret stories, MobyMax, and various instructional strategies. Students will be provided with phonics flashcards that align with the secret stories we use within class. Additionally, students will be provided with chrome books to check out for home practice with MobyMax as well. Through this grant and these strategies I hope to create a strong phonics foundation for these students so that they may approach reading with confidence.
